The Colossi of Memnon are two gigantic stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, which stand on the west bank of the Nile opposite Luxor. They are two of ancient Egypt's most famous monuments and of immense historical and cultural importance.
The Colossi were built during the reign of Amenhotep III-between about 1386-1349 BCE-to stand guard at the entrance to his mortuary temple, which has subsequently been largely destroyed.
